Procedure FAQ: MAMMOGRAPHY

WHAT IS A MAMMOGRAM AND HOW DOES IT WORK?  back to top

A mammogram is a simple, noninvasive radiologic examination utilizing x-rays or digital technology to produce multiple images of the breasts. By compressing the breast between two plastic plates, an x-ray of the breast is then taken and an image of is produced.

WHY IS MAMMOGRAPHY USED?  back to top

Mammography is a diagnostic tool used by physicians to:
  • Identify areas of the breast that may be abnormal, but have not yet produced symptoms.
  • Evaluate a woman with symptoms and determine malignant versus benign possibilities.
  • Determine the extent of disease in breasts of a patient who has breast cancer.
  • Evaluate breast implants for possible rupture.
IS MAMMOGRAPHY FOR EVERYONE?  back to top

It is very important that if you are pregnant or there is a possibility of pregnancy that you inform your physician and the center personnel prior to your mammogram procedure. Screening mammography is recommended for females starting at age 35-40 and yearly after age 40. It is very important that if you are pregant or breast feeding that you inform your physician and cener personnel prior to you procedure.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A MAMMOGRAM?  back to top

  • A mammogram should not be scheduled during the week before your menstrual cycle. The breasts are typically more tender and/or swollen during menstruation and this can impair the quality of your mammogram. The best time to have the procedure is one week following your menstrual cycle.
  • We request that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled procedure time to complete paperwork and to change clothes.
  • Please do not use deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion the day of the procedure. Particles from these substances can show up on your mammogram image and may cause a false reading.
  • Please bring the written prescription your physician gave you for this procedure.
  • Upon arrival at the center, you will be escorted into a private exam room and be asked to disrobe from the waist up. As such, we recommend that you wear pants, shorts or a skirt on the day of your procedure.
  • We strongly encourage you to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have prior to your procedure. We strongly believe that communication with our patients is an important part of the service we provide.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A MAMMOGRAM?  back to top

  • The technologist will ask you to stand next to the mammography machine and to relax so that the breasts can be properly positioned.
  • The breasts are then compressed by a plastic plate during the examination in order to separate the breast tissue. This may cause a slight discomfort, but only for a brief period of time. Initially, the breasts are imaged in two different positions. The radiologist will determine if additional views are necessary.
  • Our goal is to provide you with a pleasant and comfortable Mammography procedure. If you are uncomfortable in any way, please inform your technologist.
HOW LONG WILL THE MAMMOGRAM TAKE?  back to top

The procedure usually takes between 15-30 minutes to complete.

HEN DO I GET MY MAMMOGRAPHY RESULTS?  back to top

Our certified technologist will prepare your mammogram images for the radiologist to evaluate. The radiologist will interpret your results and dictate a written report, which will be forwarded to your physician within 72 hours of completion of your mammogram. Your physician will convey the results of the mammogram to you. If your procedure is a screening mammogram, you will receive a written report in the mail within one week of the procedure.
